Scholarships for Ugandans at International Peace Research Institute

The International Peace Research Institute, Oslo and The Australian National University’s Department of International Relations, in partnership with Bjørknes College, are offering a scholarship for Master of International Affairs Specialising in Peace and Conflict.

The program brings together academics at the forefront of international relations, peace, and conflict research from two sides of the globe. Students spend one semester at Bjørknes College in Norway with faculty from the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) pursuing courses in Conflict Resolution and Peace-Building, Ethics of Peace and War, and Gender and War. Theinternational relations courses are taken at ANU in Canberra. Participants have full access to the specialist libraries of the Nobel Institute and PRIO.

The Oslo Peace Scholarship pays the tuition fee and provides a living allowance for both Oslo and Canberra. Full details available here.

Scholarships for Ugandans to study in Australia

The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) Education Endowment Fund (EEF) scholarships were established to support the future leaders of the minerals industry through their higher education studies. The scholarships are currently valued at $8,000 per year for a standard EEF scholarship, and $14,000 per year for a Sir Frank Espie/Rio Tinto scholarship.

As well as receiving financial support over two years, students receive the invaluable benefits of mentoring and networking opportunities with a major minerals company. That is, companies who have made major donations to the Education Endowment Fund are allocated scholarship holders, and are encouraged to engage the student with the industry through vacation work and other initiatives.

Scholarships for Ugandans to study in Denmark

Scholarships for students from outside the EU/EEA for studies at Academies of Professional Higher Education and University Colleges are administered by the individual institutions.
The scholarships can be given as full or partial tuition fee waivers and/or grants towards covering your living costs. However, as the scholarships are administered by the individual institution, you should enquire about the details at the institution you are interested in studying at.

What is The Danish Ministry of Education Scholarship Scheme?
Denmark warmly welcomes highly qualified and motivated students from all over the world. A number of scholarships are therefore offered each year by the Danish Ministry of Education to fund students from countries outside the European Union/ European Economic Area. The scholarships can be awarded for a full degree programme or for part of a degree programme at undergraduate level.



Who can apply for a scholarship?
In order to be eligible to apply for a scholarship you have to be:

A citizen of a country outside the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA).
*
Permanently resident in a non-EU/EEA country.
*
Studying in Denmark outside any established exchange programme or another kind of agreement, which waives your tuition fee.


What kind of financial support can I apply for?
The amount may vary between institutions.


How and when do I apply?
If you would like to apply for a scholarship, we would strongly recommend you do the following:

1. Contact the institution which offers the specific study programme you are interested in. The institution will then provide you with the application form. The institution can also inform you about entry requirements, course descriptions, deadlines and student services.
2. Apply for a residence permit. Read the instructions below.


When will I be notified about the outcome of my application?
The institution will assess all applications as soon as this process is finalised, the applicants will be notified by the institution where they have applied for a scholarship.

How do I apply for a residence permit?
The procedures vary depending on your nationality. Students from outside the EU/EEA should note that they have to apply for the residence permit in their home country. There are also certain financial requirements attached to the process. You can find more information about residence permit in English on the home page of the Danish Immigration Service .

UNICEF Internship Programme Vacancies - Ugandans can also apply

The UNICEF Internship Programme offers eligible/qualified students at both Headquarters and country offices the opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF's work under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff.

Eligibility requirements
- You need to be a currently-enrolled graduate or post-graduate student in a field related to UNICEF’s interests. You must be enrolled during the full duration of the proposed internship period. At this time we do not accept undergraduates.
- You should be fluent in English and one other UNICEF working language i.e. French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian or Chinese.
- Your academic performance should be excellent, as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
- Your application for an internship should be supported by your university or related institution. A minimum requirement is a letter from one of your professors supporting your application. This is only needed when an internship assignment has been offered to you.
- Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in the field of international development, particularly in areas of UNICEF priorities.
- Ability to adapt and work in a multi-cultural setting.
- Has strong commitment to the values and principles of the United Nations and UNICEF's mission, guiding principles and Convention on the Rights of the Child.
- Additional consideration will be given for any past work experiences.

However, please keep in mind that even if you meet these qualifications, there is no guarantee of placement. We receive many more applications from qualified candidates than we can place. Placement is subject to availability of meaningful assignments.

Scholarships for Ugandans under the Commonwealth Commission

The Commonwealth Commission in the UK is availing 15 scholarships for The Open University program of Master of Science in Development Management. The scholarships commence November 2010.

Requirements
1. Candidates must be Ugandan or Kenyan nationals.
2. Candidates must be employed by a development NGO agency working in Uganda or Kenya for more than two years before starting the course. Government officials or individuals working in ministries can apply for the scholarship.
3. Candidates must also have a good undergraduate degree although it is not required to be in a related field
4. Highly motivated individuals and preferably working upcountry

Scholarships for Ugandans to study in UK (Bedfordshire University)

The University offers scholarships for Ugandan students of high academic standing commencing their studies at the University of Bedfordshire.

To be eligible for the International Scholarships, applicants must be a Ugandan national or permanently domiciled in Uganda, must have applied for a course of study and hold an unconditional offer for a course at the University of Bedfordshire. The International Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit.

If you wish to be considered for this scholarship you will need to apply. Applicants cannot apply for the scholarship before being offered a study place at the University of Bedfordshire.

Please note that you can only be awarded ONE University of Bedfordshire scholarship.

Position Objective:

Water For People has received a large grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop and test sustainable business models to expand sanitation coverage in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This four-year grant is aimed at achieving sustainable excreta management through catalyzing sanitation businesses and supporting the development of approaches that can be taken to scale without the need for external grant funding. Whilst undertaking this process the project will develop and document a series of business landscaping and market analysis studies that enable replication in other settings and the testing of innovative sanitation technical solution that overcome existing constraints and improve potential for commercially viable private sector organizations.

Based in Kampala, Uganda, this position will work across various grant activities to collate and analyze the information produced from the market analysis studies undertaken and the subsequent results of the implementation process. From this analysis the post holder will work with the country-based staff to develop and document an in-depth understanding of the different conditions present, different market segments, and the factors which lead to commercially viable sustainable, scalable businesses. This information will feed back into development of improved methodologies for assessing the potential of new sites and the potential of 'Sanitation as a Business' as a whole. The post holder will coordinate the dissemination process and ensure the information is present to other stakeholders within the sector in a coherent and accessible manner.

Essential Job Functions and Duties:

1.Manage the process of developing improved market analysis techniques, aimed at increasing the potential success of a sanitation business before implementation proceeds.

2.Support the country-based Business Development Managers in developing relevant information management and monitoring systems

3.Oversee the analysis of the results of market analysis studies and associated studies undertaken within the project worldwide.

4.Identify gaps in knowledge and experience with the project and support the Project Operations Manager in filling these gaps.

5.Develops sanitation business opportunity profiles (with input from others) and other methods to communicate to the Business Development Managers and other stakeholders.

6.Produce summary reports that can be shared externally, as well as internally to inform organizational thinking. Contributes to donor and other external reports.

7.Document project failures and successes, using both conventional (written) and innovative reporting formats (such as video and blog posting).

8.Manage contracts with external consultants conducting project related research and analysis, including developing Terms of Reference and evaluating quality of work completed.

9.Manage project evaluation work, including developing key indicators, tracking progress, and analyzing results for internal and external audiences.

Supervisory Duties: The position will manage consultant relationships.

Job Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skill & Ability

1.Good analytical skills coupled with an in-depth knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods.

2.The ability to extrapolate lessons learnt from a particular context and segment in one country to other situations.

3.A basic understanding of and/or a willingness to learn the principles of marketing, business models, micro-finance, supply chain management, organizational development and on-site sanitation.

4.Willing to test innovative approaches and develop ideas learnt from mistakes and unexpected outcomes.

5.Comfort in communicating and managing with diverse and international constituents.

6.Excellent verbal/written communications and presentation skills. Experience with formal publications desired.

7.Must be flexible, able to work under tight deadlines and have excellent follow through skills.

8.Experienced managing contracts and consultants.

9.Be a self starter and to work with limited supervision.

Education or Formal Training

1.Bachelor's Degree in marketing, international development, or other related discipline required
