Job Description
Marie Stopes Uganda (MSU) is a marketing-focused, results-oriented social business that uses modern management and marketing techniques to provide family planning and reproductive healthcare across every district of Uganda. We aim to contribute 15 points to Uganda’s contraceptive prevalence rate by 2015, saving and improving many thousands of Ugandan lives. MSU has 25% of the market share in modern contraceptives and, in 2010/2011, safely delivered 50,000 babies and contributed 4 points to Uganda’s contraceptive prevalence rate. MSU has enjoyed 20% year on year growth since 2007. MSU is part of a global net work, Marie Stopes International (MSI), and subscribes to MSI goal and mission, to prevent unwanted births and to ensure individual’s rights to Children by Choice not Chance.
Marie Stopes Uganda is seeking a Senior Manager, People and Development to lead the development of HR plans that are tightly linked to the organisation’s strategic plan and systematically used to direct HR activities across the organisation. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Title: Senior Manager, People and Development
Location: Head Office – Kampala – Uganda
Reporting To: Director, Corporate Services
Duration of Contract: Two Years.
Overall Role:
Working with the Senior Management Team and Human Resource and Administration staff, this role is responsible for assessing and delivering MSU HR needs to ensure achievement of strategic and operational programme goals. Particular support will be provided to ensure managers are equipped to run their businesses efficiently and are building high performance teams and integrating HR initiatives to support strategic initiatives. S/he will need to develop quick and credible relationships throughout the organisation and gain the confidence and commitment of the leadership team.
The ideal candidate will possess a background in human resources and be an innovative leader with functional knowledge in business. S/he will ideally be from a background with extensive HR generalist experience in high growth work environments. The individual should have significant experience in building best in class HR practices and leading organisations through change.
Key Responsibilities
*
Design and implement recruitment, selection and induction standards that attract the best talent for the organisation.
*
Advise and counsel management on broad organisational design and talent management issues, employee relations practices, policies and issues to ensure positive employer-employee relationship, promote high level of employee engagement and adherence to MSU policies, procedures and programs, and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
*
Develop and manage implementation of MSU’s learning and development strategy
*
Oversee the performance management system and ensure that all managers and team members are trained on how to conduct performance reviews tightly linked with meeting programme goals.
*
Lead the development of HR strategy and related annual HR business plans and KPIs linked to the organisational goals.
*
Develop management information systems and provide timely reports to senior management team on human resources.
*
Ensure the organisation has a competitive compensation and benefits system based on equity and transparency.
*
Design and implement safety standards that ensure the organisation has nil safety incidents and can demonstrate a culture of actively managing risk.
*
Promptly and thoroughly conduct investigations of employee complaints and advise management on appropriate action.
*
Responsible for oversight of HR staff and overall delivery of HR support.
Qualifications
*
HR related degree or equivalent
*
Masters or equivalent in a relevant discipline is desirable.
*
Member of a recognised HR professional body.
Experience
*
Broad knowledge and experience including, but not limited to, global HR practices, employment law, compensation, talent management, change management, employee relations and recruitment.
*
Successful track record of driving HR initiatives through business needs and decentralised environments.
*
Understanding of the complexities of working in a multicultural environment and demonstrable ability to put equity at the heart of strategy, policy and practice.
*
Significant experience of working with senior business managers, providing customer focused HR advice and support to address organisational needs.
*
Have experience of developing and successfully implementing a strategy for HR aligned with organisational objectives.
