Internship Opportunity- International

The International Internship Program strives to contribute to the
development of democracy and human rights throughout our international
network by recruiting 2 interns from overseas, who have been working
for human rights, democracy, and peace building organizations in their
home countries, and by giving them an opportunity to experience and learn the history and development process of human rights and democracy in the Republic of Korea, particularly the 1980 Gwangju Democratic Uprising.

Interns will have the chance to exchange and network with Korean civil society groups. They can also
choose or will be assigned research during the course of their
internship. As interns, they will be assigned particular duties and
responsibilities as part of the International Cooperation Project.

The annual internship program is an imperative part of the
Foundation’s mandate to promote international solidarity and further
the promotion of human rights across the world. Through the internship
program the Foundation aims:
1) to build concrete solidarity through the exchange of human resources.

Ugandan University Admissions

Admission to Higher Education
The higher education admissions process takes place in two states. First, all students who wish to be considered for admission under government sponsorship to public universities fill out the Public Universities Joint Admissions Board (PUJAB) application form and rank their top 6 choices of degree programs at public universities and 4 choices of diploma programs at other public tertiary institutions.

The minimum qualification for entry into Makerere and other public universities is 2 principal passes on the UACE. However, to earn a government scholarship students need to be outstanding. Most students will sit for either three or four subjects in their area of study (arts or sciences). Their scores on the various subjects are then weighted based on the requirement of individual programs within faculties, and the top-scoring students are admitted.

The cut-off point for admission into a particular program is determined by the lowest score of the last person accepted into that program. For example, if the Faculty of Law can take only 50 government-sponsored students, it ranks the applicants according to their weighted scores, and takes the top 50.

The weighted score of the 50th student becomes the cut-off point for Law for that year. Very popular programs like Medicine, Dentistry, and Architecture have high cutoff points, while Law, Mass Communication, and Social Work and Social Administration have lower cut-offs. Affirmative action policies, which add additional 1.5-4 points to a student’s scores, are in place for women, applicants with disabilities, talented athletes, and the children of Makerere employees1.

Following the PUJAB admissions stage, there is a second stage, this time for private admission. Whereas the Private Entry Scheme (PES) was started at Makerere, all public universities now have similar programs. Students who do not get a government scholarship are invited to put in applications under the PES.

Some students who get government scholarships for a program that was not their first choice reapply under PES. The private admission selection process is similar to the PUJAB process, and public universities do the admissions jointly. At Makerere, where programs are offered during the day and evenings, the higher performing students are put in the day programs, where they study together with the publicly-sponsored students.

How to get a Madhvani Foundation scholarship in Uganda

Introduction

The Madhvani Foundation scholarship scheme is open to all Ugandans who meet the criteria set out by the board. The selection of the recipients is based on a number of factors, including the academic performance of the candidates in the first year (CGPA) for undergraduates, the class of degree held for graduate students, the age and character of the candidate, the financial status of the student or their parents/guardians and the nature of academic references provided.

All candidates for the scholarships are put through a rigorous but transparent selection process designed to ensure that they are truly deserving of the award.
After all the initial applications are received, the Foundation’s education selection subcommittee sits and shortlists candidates who have met all the criteria and appear to have a genuine need for assistance, these candidates are then given appointments for face to face interviews. What the panel looks for in these interviews is to get to know the candidate better and ensure that the person has been truthful with the information presented.

The committee then sits once again and drafts a final list of awardees based on the results of the interviews and the funds available

The Australian universities administer the application of these requirements on a country by country basis. Applicants from Uganda do not need to prove their English Language Proficiency at this preliminary application stage, and usually do not need to prove it if selected for an award.

However, we advise successful candidates to provide one of the following proofs of English language proficiency, because it can help prevent English-proficiency problems during the process of applying for a course at an Australian Institution.

  1. Candidates that have studied at a University within the last five years which instructed in English may present an official letter from that institution indicating that the medium of instruction was English. Click here for an example.
  2. Candidates that have been out of University for longer than five years, but have worked recently in a professional environment that used English as the main language, may present a letter signed by their employer confirming that English was the medium of interaction in the workplace. Click here for an example.

In certain cases, Australian Universities may require additional proof of English even in situations where letters from the University or workplace have been provided.

Nature

Each year three winners are selected from three different African countries.

Each winner receives EUR 7,000, of which EUR 2,000 may be spent at the recipient's discretion and EUR 5,000 shall be earmarked for further research. Each prize also carries a certificate bearing a citation highlighting the major contributions for which the prize is awarded.

The prizes are presented to the recipients at a special ceremony held each year in Nairobi, Kenya, organized by TWAS and AAS.

Fellows are selected from countries and territories in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Russia, where the Ford Foundation maintains active overseas programs. University of Manchester Scholarships for Ugandans and Developing Countries

The proposed programme of research seeks to use state-of-the-art computational techniques to reverse engineer the walking cycle of a predatory dinosaur. Software for image-based modelling, parallel finite element analysis and evolutionary robotics will be coupled and deployed over a computational Grid comprising many thousands of processors. This resource will facilitate a range of unique meta-experiments, enabling new scientific research to be undertaken that would otherwise not be possible. Not only will these experiments provide insight into the evolution of bipedalism or answer questions such as “How fast could T-Rex run?”, they will also lead to the development of computational techniques that may be applied in classical engineering sectors such as the Automotive and Aerospace Industries.

Aga Khan Foundation Scholarships

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master's level courses but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are necessary for the career objectives of the student. Requests will also be considered for travel and study awards for PhD students doing their research in Third World countries on topics judged to be of interest to the Aga Khan Development Network. Applications for short-term courses are not considered; neither are applications from students who have already started their course of study.

Geographic Scope. The Foundation accepts applications from countries where it has branches, affiliates or other AKDN agencies which can help with processing applications and interviewing applicants. At present, these are Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Syria, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, Madagascar, France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada.

Selection Criteria. The main criteria for selecting award winners are: l) excellent academic records, 2) genuine financial need, 3) admission to a reputable institution of higher learning and 4) thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans. Candidates are also evaluated on their extra-curricular interests and achievements, potential to achieve their goals and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment. Applicants are expected to have some years of work experience in their field of interest.

Age Limit. Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.

Financial Assistance. The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Applicants are requested to make every effort to obtain funding from other sources as well, so that the amount requested from the Foundation can be reduced to a minimum. Preference is given to those who have been able to secure some funding from alternative sources.

Loan Conditions. Half of the scholarship amount is considered as a loan, which must be reimbursed with an annual service charge of 5%. A guarantor is required to co-sign the loan agreement. The payback period is five years, starting six months after the study period funded by the Aga Khan Foundation.

Application Procedures. The application procedures of AKF's International Scholarship Programme are decentralised. Students may obtain application forms as of January 1st each year from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services / Boards in their countries of current residence. Completed applications should be returned to the agency from which the form was obtained, or to the address indicated on the front of the form. They should not be sent to Geneva. The deadline for submission of applications is March 31.

Applicants should be prepared to be interviewed by local Scholarship Committees about their financial situation, their academic performance, extra-curricular achievements and career plans. Interview reports are sent with the applications to Geneva for the final selection.

The annual Scholarship Selection Meeting takes place in late June or early July and the Aga Khan Foundation notifies all students of the outcome of their application shortly thereafter.
