The World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency against world hunger. In light of its operations, WFP is establishing a Regional Fleet which will be on stand-by mainly for emergencies in the Great Lakes region (Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo - DRC, Kenya, Tanzania and South Sudan). WFP cherishes and takes pride in its human resources; and therefore seeks to recruit competent persons for the positions listed below:

Post Title : Mechanic
Post Grade : SB2 Min (G3 Equivalent)
Duty Station : Kampala

Job Purpose:
Under the direct supervision of the Logistics Officer (Regional Fleet Manager) and the overall supervision of the Logistics Officer -Strategic Fleet, the incumbent will be responsible for servicing the newly created regional truck fleet and will be required to undertake the following duties;-
Duties and Responsibilities
• Examine, inspect and report on the condition, roadworthiness or safety of any truck or equipment, including functional testing and the application of computerized service and diagnostic techniques;
• Service, maintain, adjust or repair vehicles, equipment or components utilizing the necessary tools, equipment and facilities in a safe manner within the standard job times defined by the vehicle/ equipment manufacturer;
• Interpret and implement technical service data and statutory maintenance standards to ensure that all work performed is in accordance with minimum requirements defined;
• Recovery of broken down or immobilized vehicles and equipment, utilizing proper techniques to minimize the risk of additional damage without causing any danger to the public;
• Apply the organization's policies in respect to maintenance practices and standards to ensure that these are fully implemented and that maximum benefit is obtained in terms of equipment availability and minimizing costs,
• Apply in a logical and progressive manner the appropriate diagnostic techniques to determine the cause or causes of reported malfunctions in vehicles, components or systems. Including also recommendations for improvements and modifications designed to enhance safety and reliability;
• Use safe working practices and procedures at all times and in particular to comply with the organizations Health and Safety at work policy. Including the wearing of protective clothing and consideration for the environment;
• Share experience gained with other staff members and strive towards creating good team building and harmonious atmosphere;
• Travel together with the fleet during deployment in neighboring countries and stay with the fleet at deployment site until the end of the mission;
• Perform any other duties as requested by the immediate supervisor;


Job requirement

Qualifications and Experience:
Applicants should be persons of high integrity, hardworking, able to work under minimum supervision, good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multicultural team environment coupled with the following:
• A diploma in motor vehicle mechanical engineering or certificates in Auto Mechanics attained from a recognized institution;
• At least four (4) years experience with auto mechanics gained in both light and heavy Vehicles obtained from a reputable organisation;
• Undertaken technical refresher training with reference to Renault and Scania vehicles;
• Experience gained using a computerised Fleet management system;
• Membership to any relevant professional institution;
• Holder of a full driving licence for all the categories of vehicle on which employed.
• Good working knowledge and experience in using MS Office applications;
• Good command of English is vital.
