The Country Director position is key to the success of the overall ministry of Water Missions International. This role will have a tremendous impact on the effectiveness and growth of Water Missions International's international programs.
As with all positions in the organization, this position is as much a calling as it is a job. The person in this position must sense a clear calling from God and a heartfelt passion for our mission. The person must be in sympathy with Christian values.
Because our mission is global, urgent, and enormous, the person in this position must have the temperament and energy to be a leader in an entrepreneurial environment. The person must have the ability and be willing to fulfill multiple roles and tasks. He or she must not only be comfortable in, but be energized by a highly fluid, rapidly changing work environment. This person must be able to grow professionally as the organization grows.
Under the direction of the Director of Africa Programs, the Country Director is responsible for carrying out the mission of Water Missions International - to implement safe water projects in community development and disaster response situations and communicate the Living Water message - in the country of residence and in nearby countries as needs dictate. The Country Director must be a leader who is able to embrace the vision and mission of Water Missions International with a sense of urgency and then be able to inspire others in the work. The Country Director must be a competent manager who is able to oversee a diverse staff likely to consist of indigenous and western personnel. As a leader and manager, the Country Director must be able to oversee and direct projects to successful and sustainable conclusions according to Water Missions International established standards. He or she must also be able to organize and lead administrative functions, including payroll and other aspects of personnel management as well as project accounting and tracking (project budgets and tracking project expenditures ). The Country Director is also responsible for evaluating people and organizations for potential partnerships which would further ministry effectiveness.
This position is based in one of Water Missions International's East Africa programs (Kenya, Malawi, or Uganda). As a result, the position requires full time residence in-country. Some travel to other developing countries to build relationships and carry out the mission of Water Missions International, including disaster response and on-going development projects within those countries, may be required.
Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:
Prepare written budget proposals, program proposals and cost estimates
Perform project management tasks including developing scope of work, project budget, project schedule and periodic project status reports
Conduct field inspections and site assessments as well as provide training related to these tasks
Report country program performance against budget, goals and measures
Provide technical direction and assistance for in-country staff, volunteers and partner organizations
Prepare and deliver presentations to Water Missions International staff, the country program Board of Directors, partners, volunteers and donors as needed
Hire, train and lead full-time and part-time staff
Evaluate people and organizations for potential ministry partnerships
Minimum education and work experience:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in a related field
Minimum of 10 years experience in leadership and management positions
Demonstrated experience in Christian ministry, evangelism and discipleship
Advanced computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
Excellent analytical and supervisory skills
Excellent organization and project leadership and management skills
Excellent relationship and mentoring skills
Required qualifications:
An understanding of and commitment to the mission to provide access to safe water and an opportunity to hear the good news of salvation to people in need throughout the world
A clear, God given calling to the mission
Ability to mentor and disciple others in ministry work
An understanding of and ability to work with Board Members, volunteers and all levels of staff
Ability to command respect and confidence
Ability to lead teams toward common goals and overcome diverse obstacles
Ability to organize personal work load and maintain a well functioning office
Ability to work through complex issues and employ reasoning skills to solve problems
An intuitive sense of timing and appropriateness in relation to projects
Ability and willingness to work flexible hours including nights and weekends when necessary
A self-starter who problem solves and follows through without prodding but knows when and how to ask for assistance and counsel
A level of impeccable integrity and stewardship that demonstrates to those who invest in Water Missions International a sense of security and trust that their gifts are well used and invested
Ability to thrive in a highly fluid environment that can be very unstructured in times of emergency
