Brief description:

The Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program’s (IFP) mission is to expand educational opportunity and foster social justice in developing countries. IFP provides fellowships for post-graduate study to emerging leaders from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Russia and Latin America. These leaders come from marginalized and excluded communities that typically lack access to higher education.

IFP was launched in 2001 with $280 million, the largest single grant in Ford Foundation history. In April 2006 the Ford Foundation announced a new pledge of $75 million for IFP. The program expects
to support approximately 4,300 Fellows when final selections are completed in 2010. IFP will conclude in 2013.

Host Institution(s):

The fellowship supports study programs in universities throughout the world. The program has developed partnerships with dozens of universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, and continental Europe, as well as in the Fellows’ home regions.

Number of Awards:

Over 3,300 Fellows have been selected from more than 65,000 candidates in Africa and the Middle East, Asia, Russia and Latin America. Almost 400 recently selected Fellows are now in preparatory training and admissions processes.

Target group:

Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program applicants must be resident nationals or residents of an eligible IFP country or territory. Currently, these are: Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Mozambique, Nigeria, Palestinian Territories, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and Vietnam.

Approximately half the selected Fellows are women, many are from ethnic, religious or linguistic minority groups in their home countries, and the majority comes from rural areas or small towns.

Scholarship value/inclusions:

IFP fellowships support up to three years of study for master’s, doctoral, or professional post-graduate degrees. Fellows receive a comprehensive package of benefits, including preparatory training, placement assistance and academic support during their post-graduate programs.

Eligibility:

IFP selects Fellows on the strength of their clearly-stated intention to serve their communities and countries of origin, and expects that they will honor this obligation.

Successful candidates will:

• Demonstrate superior achievement in their undergraduate studies and hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent.
• Have substantial experience in community service or development-related activities.
• Possess leadership potential evidenced by their employment and academic experience.
• Propose to pursue a post-baccalaureate degree that will directly enhance their leadership capacity in a practical, policy, academic, or artistic discipline or field corresponding to one or more of the Foundation’s areas of endeavor.
• Present a plan specifying how they will apply their studies to social problems or issues in their own countries. Commit themselves to working on these issues following the fellowship period.

Because local requirements and deadlines vary among IFP countries, applicants should follow the specific application guidelines provided by IFP International Partner organizations (see the link below).

Scholarship Criteria:

Fellows are selected on the basis of their academic record and potential, leadership skills and social commitment. Selections are carried out by independent committees in individual countries and regions.

Application instructions:

All applications must be submitted to the appropriate IFP International Partner in the country or region where the applicant resides. IFP International Partners determine application deadlines and selection schedules in their region or country.
