Job Title: Programme Director

Save the Children is the world's leading independent organisation for children. Save the Children in Uganda is a unification of Save the Children Norway (Managing Member), Save the Children Denmark, Save the Children USA, Save the Children UK and Save the Children Italy programmes operating in Uganda.

Kampala; with regular travel to the field offices
Reporting to the Country Director, the Programme Director contributes to and shares responsibility for the overall development of Save the Children in Uganda (SCiUG). He/she is directly accountable for SCiUG's development and emergency programming and provides thematic, M&E and advocacy/communications expertise to deliver world-class programmes in Uganda. The Programme Director holds overall responsibility for ensuring that all programs in Uganda are developed and implemented in line with the highest standards in program management, technical excellence and child rights programming principles. This includes budget development, control, monitoring, evaluation and reporting, as well as initiating and developing partnerships with civil society. The Programme Director is responsible for serving Save the Children participating members, nurturing key donor relationships and ensuring a growing funding pipeline. He/she advocates for the rights of children and communicates insights from program development and implementation. The Programme Director builds and maintains excellent teamwork relationships with his/her Senior Management Team (SMT) colleagues and line manages the thematic programme managers, DME, Advocacy/Communications and Emergency teams.
Academic back ground, Experience & Person Specifications;

  • Ideally a Masters Degree in Development studies, Management, Social Sciences or other relevant field.
  • At least 10 years progressive experience in either development or emergency contexts is necessary, preferably of which 4 years at senior management level.
  • Substantial people and programme management skills and experience of building, leading and developing a team of senior staff with different cultural backgrounds and professional expertise, in a fast moving, multi-sectoral environment. Proven record of employing a team-building and people-friendly approach with capacity building skills and experience of solving complex issues through analysis, definition of a clear way forward
  • Solid experience in grant management, including budget holding and donor reporting
  • Good knowledge and skills in project / programme monitoring and evaluation
  • Representational, advocacy and diplomatic skills, including experience of building personal networks at a senior level, resulting in securing new opportunities for the organisation
  • Good understanding and commitment to principles of child rights and child protection
  • Good knowledge of international donors and development politics, trends and priorities.
  • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children vision, mission, values and principles
  • Ability and willingness to undertake periodic field travel to up-country and in insecure areas
