Purpose of the Position

Under the direct supervision of the WHO Representative and under technical programmatic guidance of Regional Advisor /IVD/AFRO, the polio consultant will provide technical assistance to the Ministry of Health with special focus on high risk districts to strengthen and improve the quality of polio eradication initiative in particular AFP surveillance activities, high quality implementation of routine immunization, supplementary immunization activities for polio eradication and implementation of VPD surveillance within the IDSR framework. The incumbent will perform the following duties:

    To assist District Health officers, District surveillance Officers and Health Sub district officers of Karamonja sub region and other poor performing regions as would be identified through the regular monitoring achieve certification level AFP surveillance in accordance with developed and approved surveillance plans.
    Assist Districts within Karamoja sub-region establish community based disease surveillance
    Provide technical support supervison of surveillance activities within the region (s)
    Assist the National EPI manager and WHO IVD team in supporting, organizing local training/review meetings and providing technical assistance in planning, monitoring, evaluation and reporting programme activities
    Assist in monitoring laboratory support for polio eradication activities in the region (s).
    Assist in monitoring the completeness and timeliness of reporting and the use of surveillance performance indicators at regional and district level.
    Will assist the districts to develop and regularly update district specific plan of action for polio eradication initiative, supervise their implementation and assist with preparation of progress reports.
    Assist with co-ordination, implementation and supervision of supplementary immunization activities including ad- hoc mopping-up operations and regional EPI/IDSR supervisors.
    To perform any other functions assigned by the WHO Representative.

    Very good communication skills Good analytical skills Educational Qualifications Essential The suitable candidate will preferably have qualifications including a Bachelor's degree in biomedical Sciences or health sciences from a recognized university. A Master's degree in Public Health is an added advantage. Experience
    Seven years experience in public health programmes in the areas of public health surveillance with an added advantage in VPD surveillance, immunization and disease control including experience at an international level and in working with developing countries. Languages
    Proficiency in written and spoken English; working knowledge of French would be added advantage. Other skills
    Knowledge of MS Office and statistical analytical packages: EPIINFO, Health Mapper or EPI MAP
