Field Research Consultant Job Vacancy in Uganda at Center for American Progress

Summary

Enough, a project of the Center for American Progress to end genocide and crimes against humanity , has an immediate opening for a Field Research Consultant to do research on the Lord's Resistance Army crisis. The field researcher will be based in Uganda and conduct research and draft regular updates on the security, political, and humanitarian situation in LRA-affected areas in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic.

The consultant will serve as Enough's field link by providing regular updates, analysis, and policy recommendations as events unfold on the ground. The consultant will research and write reports/briefings on security, conflict, political, governance, legal, and social issues relating to the Lord's Resistance Army. The consultant will also contribute to the dynamic mission of Enough by taking photos, blogging, and shooting video. Travel within the region, sometimes under demanding conditions, will be required.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

â- Conduct field research, provide analysis, and propose policy initiatives for relevant actors to help prevent crimes against humanity by the Lord's Resistance Army.

â- Draft strategy papers and other policy documents on a regular basis, drawing from relevant research findings and policy recommendations.

â- Provide informal updates for Enough staff on a regular basis.

â- Provide input on a variety of products—reports, op-eds, articles—pertaining to the LRA crisis.

â- Liaise with NGOs and civil society organizations in LRA-affected areas.

â- Help facilitate field travel for Enough D.C.-based staff and assist media trips as needed.

â- Contribute regular content for the Enough blog that is dynamic, original, and thoroughly grounded in policy expertise, and accessible to a broad audience.

â- Contribute other content to Enough's website, including podcasts, audio clips, and other appropriate media.

Requirements and qualifications:

â- University degree (M.A. preferred) and relevant work experience conducting research in international relations, political science, or a related field.

â- Fluency in English required; foreign language skills, particularly French, Luo, Swahili, or Lingala, a strong advantage.

â- Experience doing field research on the Lord's Resistance Army.

â- In depth knowledge of and extensive contacts with government officials, regional and subregional organizations, nongovernmental organizations and civil society leaders, the media, and academia working in the region.

â- Good understanding of the policymaking process and the link between activism and policy.

â- Academic background or work experience in the prevention of atrocities, human rights , conflict prevention and resolution, and the responsibility to protect.

â- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.

â- Strong desire to live and work overseas in war-affected environments.

â- Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

â- Adept team player with good interpersonal skills.

â- Excellent communication skills–verbal and written (particularly online).

â- Committed to the organization's missions and goals.
