The National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI) is one of the Public Agricultural Research Institute established by the National Agricultural Research Act 2005. The Institute is mandated to undertake Research of strategic nature and of national importance in Capture Fisheries and Aquaculture under the policy guidance of National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO). Applications are invited from suitably qualified Ugandans for the following vacant position:
Overall Purpose
Provide technical support to research scientists and stakeholders undertaking studies on physico-chemical environment in experimental settings (e.g. ponds), farm enterprises and water bodies; develop and maintain database for both capture fisheries and aquaculture research information.
Terms of Reference
Plan and undertake field, on-station and laboratory work to collect and analyze data on the physical-chemical parameters that influence fish productivity and generate scientific reports.
Determine physico-chemical parameters in water (e.g. Dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, nutrients e.g. Total Phosphorus, Total Nitrogen, Soluble Reactive Phosphorus, etc), take readings for wind movement, solar, rainfall, turbidity and humidity.
Apply advanced analytical techniques and modifications.
Fix and calibrate equipment used both in the lab and in the field.
Preserve and maintain samples in the laboratory.
Fabricate field and laboratory tools and equipment.
Develop and maintain experimental tools and equipments used in collecting samples.
Collecting sediment and water samples for determination of pollutants, heavy metals and nutrients levels.
Maintain general laboratory organisation and cleanness.
Minimum Qualifications
Ordinary Diploma in Science Technology (Chemistry) supported by at least Credit passes in Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and English at O-level and a combination at A-level that includes Chemistry and Biology.
Additional qualifications in Water Quality, Environmental Science, Analytical and Industrial Chemistry are strong added advantages.
Minimum of four years relevant working experience gained from a reputable institution.
Demonstrated ability in the use of appropriate analytical equipment (e.g. AAD, GLC, HPLC, Auto-Analysers, etc).
Key Competencies
Knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry, industrial chemistry, principles and practical applications
Ability to use computerized instruments and equipment and use of MS Office applications.
Demonstrated ability and willingness to undertake field based data collection for extended periods of time under minimum supervision.
Ability to execute safety precautions to minimize occupational hazards.
