Job Title: SUB EDITOR
Reports to: DIGITAL EDITOR
Job Purpose: To edit or rewrite and publish web content submitted by various authors and ensure that this content is consistent and accurate.
Key Responsibilities:
- Edit or rewriting web content from reporters/ writers so that it flows or reads better and adheres to the NMG Editorial style of the Online Edition
- Cross check facts and sources for stories submitted to ensure they are accurate and are not libelous or go against the NMG Editorial policy
- Ensure that the Daily Monitor websites are up-to- date with content which is written and presented in a format that meets web usability standards (i.e. usage of keywords, meta tags, alt tags for images, etc.)
- Select and caption appropriate pictures and deciding where to use them for best effect Manage Picture Galleries, audio & video
- Archives on a weekly basis Write breaking news stories for various publishing channels i.e. Websites, SMS, Facebook, Twitter etc.
- Moderate online comments and continuously update the websites and all Monitor social media forums
- Come up with new innovations to constantly give the Daily Monitor websites the edge over its competition
- Assist the Internet Editor with ensuring that traffic to monitor.co.ug increases.
- Maintain awareness of critical online publishing platforms and trends; stay up-to-date on emerging and current technologies.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Diploma in Journalism.
- At least 3 years' experience working with large/ Complex Web site.
- Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills required.
- Excellent command of English language, grammar and style. Excellent understanding of social media platforms.
- Excellent editorial skills with a sound knowledge of writing for the web and engaging online audiences
- Solid experience managing dynamic websites Experience with content management systems.
- Proven experience in creating, editing and managing content in a print, broadcast and online setting.
- Experience with multimedia software and working with editorial staff in training and usability of such software.
- A wide degree of creativity and team work is expected.
