Job Title: LEGAL COUNSELOR (One position available)
Reports to:       Area Manager
Liaises with:   Project Officers (especially for Community Services), Logistics Officer, Finance Officer, Medical Doctor, Nursing staff, among others

Duty Station:  Kyangwali.
Job Summary:
Co-ordinates and provides legal services to survivors of gender and sexual based violence in consultation with the medical staff and the Project Officer for Community Services.

Duties & Responsibilities

    *
      Plan and oversee the delivery of the legal counseling services to families, in a non-discriminatory manner.
    *
      Provide a group legal counseling & psychotherapeutic services to groups of persons of interest.
    *
      Establish follow up plans to ensure survivors are fully supported to get the justices they need while observing and being seen to observe confidentiality in all cases handled.
    *
      Carry out legal counseling service in line with expressed needs of persons of interest in consultation with the Program Management Team.
    *
      Monitor and evaluate the legal service on a regular basis, providing update reports to the Supervisor. Conduct home visits to families of interest where relevant and appropriate.
    *
      Recruit, manage and appraise legal counseling volunteers, providing development and training opportunities in consultation with the Program Management Team.
    *
      Liaise with other Counselors to share practice and contribute to the development of comprehensive counseling services to persons of interest in Program Areas.
    *
      Attend relevant professional and programmatic meetings.
    *
      Support other staff in developing a work place which provides a fair and friendly atmosphere that supports persons of interest.
    *
      Liaise with a full range of relevant professionals in social work, health, education and voluntary agencies, in order to co-ordinate services for families and to raise awareness of available legal counseling services.
    *
      Keep abreast of developments in family law and take part in research activities as required.
    *
      Arrange regular monitoring sessions with volunteers
    *
      Carry out any other duties as required by the supervisor


Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

    *
      A Diploma in Legal Practice or a related qualification from a recognized institution.
    *
      At least one year’s experience in a similar position.

·         Excellent inter-personal and communication skills
·         A good command of both written and spoken English
·         Patient, understanding and of a pleasant character
·         Computer literate with ability to use Microsoft Office
·         Able to capacity build and develop others
·         Commitment to the organizational values
