Job Title: ANIMAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN

Salary Scale: UR 6

Tasks and Responsibilities:

1. Attending to livestock and undertaking activities such as spraying, vaccinations, deworming, dehorning, castration, tagging, insemination, diagnosis and treatment, weighing, milking and general maintenance of the paddock
2. Preparing animal feeds and ensuring that the right quality and quantity of feed is given to animals
3. Undertaking routine maintenance of instruments, equipment and facilities including installation and calibration
4. Conducting disease surveillance by visiting farmers to establish extent of disease and ticks outbreak
5. Developing a field plan for conducting experiments, preparing materials such as measurement instruments, tools and other equipment for undertaking field experiments
6. Collecting data, specimens and samples of insects and ticks from vegetation and farm animals at various experimental plots according to work plan
7. Collection, preservation, and identification of genera and species of insects and ticks to identify diseases they cause
8. Analyzing experimental data, interpreting results and preparing charts and graphs in order to support the documentation of research findings and results
9. Participating in baseline surveys to determine farmer needs and production constraints as well as establish the impact of technology adoption
10. Participate in developing and delivering education and training programmes to farmers and other stakeholders including students on visits and attachments
11. Participate in livestock exhibitions and other programmes designed for technology transfer

Qualifications and Experience

1. Diploma in Veterinary Science or equivalent qualifications
2. Two years relevant experience gained from a reputable organization

Key Competencies

1. Knowledge of livestock, insects and other micro organisms, their tissues, cells, functions, interdependencies, and interactions with each other and the environment
2. Ability to listen, understand and communicate information and ideas presented through spoken words and in writing
3. Proficiency in computer software applications and statistical packages
4. Ability to participate in multidisciplinary work teams
