Education in Palliative Care commenced at Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) in 1993. It started with training health workers at certificate level followed by Diploma through Distance Learning programmes that have been expanded to degree level. HAU is affiliated to Makerere University through which successful candidates are awarded their diplomas and degrees. Last year the Education Department at HAU was recognised as an Institute of Higher Learning by the National Council for Higher Education.

We are now seeking a dynamic leader (Vice Chancellor) for this Institute, who has experience in palliative care and/or higher education. The applicant should have experience in University administration at the level of a Dean or Head of Department.

Job Purpose:
To be a face for Africa and the world, for the new Institute, this is the only such Palliative Care training facility in Africa today.

To promote teaching of excellence adapted to the African economic and cultural circumstances; to promote research and publications within all areas of palliative care.


Specific Duties:
• To promote and carry forward the overall vision of HAU and within that, the Institute, in line with the spirit and ethos of HAU and other African countries
• To ensure the improvement, continuation of teaching programmes while introducing and improving new programmes in line with recent advances in palliative medicine.
• To promote teaching and research within the Institute while producing trainers through programmes for the rest of Africa.
• To be a visionary leader to the Team of the Institute

Minimum Requirements:
A doctorate and/or post graduate degree in palliative medicine or related specialty. Post graduate degrees in development studies, economics, business, education, social sciences, or other related fields would be considered.

At least five years of program management experience, preferably in a University or Institution of Higher Learning.

At least 10 published papers and experience in research in the medical setting. Previous experience in Africa is an added advantage.
