It strives to uphold excellent clinical standards, as well as providing quality education courses and advocacy activities to promote spread of palliative care. In this way HAU serves as a model of quality palliative care provision for all of Africa. HAU requires skilled personnel with a passion for palliative care.

The CED will coordinate all aspects of Hospice in Uganda, so that patients and families continue to receive quality care. The job holder would be expected to develop organizational structures that enhance staff support and development towards realization of HAU goals. And will oversee the restructuring process of the organizational structure as well the strategic plan in collaboration with the board of Directors to achieve maximum efficiency and effectiveness. As being in an interim position, the post holder will be supported by a well developed administrative team.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Provide leadership in organizational development, redesign and develop structures that ensure that the organization of Hospice is fit for purpose.
- Provide leadership in the preparation and implementation of strategic and operational plans and budgets for the organisation.
- Lead, inspire and challenge a team of dedicated professionals and non- professionals, towards realization of HAU Mission.
- Work closely with other members of the External Relations team and other senior managers and staff to develop and implement HAU strategic efforts to increase awareness and visibility of Palliative Care services in Uganda.
- Participate in the development of a cohesive, focused and effective advocacy and grant making strategy.
- Ensures all activities are aligned with the overall strategy and undertake quarterly or more frequent evaluations of activities against work plan and HAU strategy.
- Works with the Ministry of Health and networking organizations in Uganda and other African countries to promote Palliative care services.
Administration And Liaison
- Coordinates and implement policies and keep the Board fully informed on program and organization's activities through regular accountability reports and briefings.
- Encourages capacity building for HAU including infrastructure and human resource development; ensure efficient and effective management of resources.
- Ensures policies and standards are clear and followed in order to guide implementation of Palliative Care services in Uganda.
- With knowledge of the financial health of the organization ensure that requests, equipments or assistance from the team members are kept within the budget of Hospice donors, while explaining carefully to team member if requests have to be refused.
- Works with the management team at regular meetings, keeping them informed and also listening and coordinating matters from each department while taking or recommending actions in conjunction with the team.
- Oversees the development of necessary structures that maintain good relationships in the organization with support from the Human Resource Manager.
- Ensures that the BOD of Hospice Africa UK is consulted and kept informed of any proposed changes affecting the structure or economic needs of the organization.
- Supervises and guides the Director of Education, Director of Clinical Services, Director of Programmes, Head of HR and Administration Department and Head of Finance Department to ensure smooth running of HAU programs.
- Promote an open, diverse and participatory work environment.
- To be aware of the roles of volunteers and to be able to acknowledge and affirm them in their work..
- Guides regular team meetings and other team meetings so that peace and harmony are assured within the team spirit of love for each other and the patient and family.
- Promotes the HAU vision, mission and core values among partners in the region.
- Liaises and develops networks with government, non-government, partners and donors promoting an understanding of HAU Palliative care work
- Develops and maintains close relationships with counterparts and identify potential new donors
- Ensures appropriate representation of HAU at local and regional events and forums to promote Palliative Care
- S/he will oversee closely the Fund Raising events, guiding the team and volunteers in local contacts and involving the expatriate community.
- S/he will oversee and sign all applications for funding or designate a senior member to do so.
- S/he will be particularly vigilant in identifying local donors who might be interested in regular giving to sustain the basic needs of patients and families.
The jobholder must have a post graduate degree in a field related to Business Administration, Development Studies, Public Health or other related field.
Experience in organizational development, skills in business administration, strategic planning, organizational development, donor liaisons, human resource and administration management and proficiency in networking and fundraising is a must.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, reflective and team building skills also required.
Knowledge and practical experience in Palliative care is added advantage. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Computer literate in standard computer applications.
