Ndejje University

History and background

Ndejje University was first established in 1992 under a different name and ownership. The University acquired its present status in 1995 under the Anglican Diocese of Luweero. It continued operating under this narrow ownership base until 2002 when the ownership base was enlarged to include all the six Church of Uganda Dioceses in the Buganda Region.

The University is Chartered by the Government Of the Republic of Uganda

Ndejje University pioneered the private university education in Uganda and is currently among the leading privately run universities, Chartered by the Government of Uganda. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Ndejje University has three campuses

The Kampala Campus in the urban setting, at Plot 151, Balintuma Road, just below Mengo Hospital, Kampala. It is ideal for the working class in and around Kampala City. The second and third Campuses (The Main and Lady Irene) are located on 200 acres of land, in a rural setting at Ndejje Hill, Luweero District. This is 42 kilometers (26 miles ) north of Kampala - ideal for quiet and serious study activities. Fear of God brings knowledge & wisdom

Objectives
The objects of Ndejje University are:
• To provide resources and facilities for higher education, excellence in teaching, and promotion of research and advanced learning within the context of Christian faith, practice and spirituality.

• To provide, with other Christian institutions, academic leadership to the Church and society in Uganda and Africa, so as to address through research, education and consultation, the economic, social and political problems that are unique to the Ugandan and African society.

• To guide students to understand and accept themselves, their individual needs and talents, and to develop their potential for productive life and service.

• To provide students with a balanced educational program that helps them to develop professional skills. and to broaden their perception so as to develop a holistic approach to life.

Objectives

Information Technology (IT) Services

Information and Communications Technology is an important part of students' studies at Ndejje University. IT Services are on hand at all its three campuses to provide students the facilities they need to make their life at Ndejje University a success. They are important research and learning resources.

University Library

The University Library is an essential resource for all including postgraduate students. Ndejje University Library at the Main Campus has more than 30,000 volumes of books and about 5,000 periodicals, journals, magazines and other special collections. The library also has internet facilities, and is being improved and developed every year to meet the varied needs of students. There is a branch of the same at the Kampala Campus, stocked mostly with the business books, periodicals, journals and magazines and other related documents. Internet facilities are also available.

Postal, Telephone and Internet Services

There are postal, telephone, and e-mail facilities within the University and its neighborhood. Students are also free to acquire and use their own mobile telephones. Fear of God brings knowledge & wisdom

Accommodation:
When you first move to a new place, finding somewhere to live can be a daunting task. Ndejje University has many campuses, and good halls of residence geared to the needs of students. Others are also under construction. However, the University does not provide accommodation for married students. Such students must find their own accommodation. Anyone interested in the University accommodation should contact the Dean of Students, the Wardens and Custodians who are responsible for it.

Students' Welfare:
The University has a students' health service providing medical facilities, free of charge, to students. It is maintained by a team of two Doctors, Nursing assistants , counselors and laboratory technicians on a full- time basis. The complicated cases are referred to Mengo Hospital in Kampala. Canteen servicesare provided for shopping basic life goods.

Religious LIfe:
Ndejje University does not discriminate anybody on the basis of religion; all religions are recognized. Hence it has several religious associations, including Protestants, Catholics, the Seventh Day Adventists, Moslems and the Pentecostals. Each association freely organizes the weekly worship and other religious functions as deemed fit, as long as it aims at promoting the well-being of the students and the University through encouraging positive religious values. However, the Protestants and Catholics have Chaplains assisted by several priests in the University. '

Tutorship scheme:
Each Department at Ndejje University has a system of student advisors who can provide information and advice on a range of issues, including personal, academics and financial matters. Similarly, psychological and counseling services are freely and confidentially provided to all students. Hence the scheme acts as guidance to students.

Sports and Recreation:
Life in Ndejje University is not about studying alone. There are also excellent sports facilities to help every student make the best of his/her spare time. One doesn't have to be a world champion to take part -Ndejje University caters for a diverse range of interests at all levels of ability. The University provides facilities and opportunities for a wide range of sports and recreation. These include playgrounds for football, volleyball, rugby, badminton, darts, netball, table tennis, lawn tennis, softball, basketball, chess, and other indoor games. Other recreational activities include clubs, social activities, and cultural events, to mention just a few. Students normally take part in those activities from 5.00 to 7.00 pm during the week days, and from 3.00 to 6.00 pm during week -ends. Ndejje University is a renowned powerhouse in the inter-university sports competitions, both in Uganda and East Africa, particularly in athletics. All students, both females and males, compete under their halls of residence. In fact most students' social activities are organized by students in their halls of competition. Ndejje University has extended its tentacles of success to the World University games during the last 10 years. It has fielded the biggest number of participants for the national joint universities' team to the World University Games in China, Korea and Turkey. Ndejje University has also constantly fielded participants in national teams like the 2005 Olympics in Athens, Greece; the 2006 Common wealth Games in Australia; the World Cross Country in India, Japan, etc. During the last five years, the University has sent 13 athletic students to American and European Universities on sports related scholarship basis. Such Universities like Arkansas, Boise State University (Indiana), Bethune -Cookman College (Florida), etc. have some students from Ndejje University under athletics scholarships.

Students Organizations, Societies and Clubs:
The multi-cultural student community at Ndelie University has naturally led to the formation of several associations! clubs meant to promote cultural events. These also provide a fascinating insight into the various cultural styles enjoyed by the various students in the University. Thus several students' associations of particular tribes, district or regions are glaring examples of student clubs/organizations set up to uphold cultural diversity.
