Description:
The Bantwana Initiative of World Education, Inc. seeks a candidate for a Livelihoods Specialist position based in Uganda pending award of a cooperative agreement from USAID/Uganda to reduce the vulnerability and improve the well-being of Uganda s orphans and other vulnerable children. The Livelihoods Specialist will lead technical assistance in economic strengthening to NGOs, CBOs, FBOs, schools and other partners delivering essential services to orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC) and their households in Uganda. The Livelihoods Specialist will work with program partners to develop a strategy for designing appropriate community-centered livelihoods/economic strengthening activities, training CBO staff and OVC households, and will work closely with other key partners, including NGOs and NAADS extension workers to implement and evaluate program activities.

The Project will focus on areas including:

1) Improve the socio-economic status of OVC households with a comprehensive and family focused package for their survival, growth, development and participation in the community;

2) Promote and provide child protection and legal services to OVC and their households; and

3) Strengthen delivery of integrated, quality social services to the OVC and their households through community based response systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Design, implement, and manage an experiential, multiphase training program for strengthening CBO/FBO capacity to carry out economic strengthening activities for OVC and their households;

Manage materials development process for livelihoods program, particularly for youth;

Train, mentor and coach CBO field staff;

Coordinate efforts across components of the project;

Serve as senior technical advisor on livelihoods development to the management team;

Participate in the development of relationships with national NGO and CBO/FBO partners, and other stakeholders;

Participate in the negotiation of NGO and CBO agreements;

Assist the M&E and research team in the design of monitoring and evaluation systems to ensure the impact of training initiatives;

Keep abreast of new work in technical areas and disseminate new knowledge to staff;

Collaborate with other program staff to ensure timely delivery of products and regular reporting; and

Advocate and promote scale-up of best practices in economic strengthening activities for OVC and their households.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master s Degree in relevant field degree preferred;

5-10 years experience in non-formal education training and workshop facilitation for community-based interventions;

Experienced in training of trainers design, materials development and implementation for livelihoods, small-business enterprise, economic strengthening, value chain and agro-business work, and youth development;

Background in organizational development issues such as institutional development, management, and advocacy with community-level organizations;

Knowledge of formal education systems, civil society, child protection, and HIV and AIDS &
community-based interventions in Uganda;

Excellent written and oral communication skills;

Extensive experience in Uganda; and

Fluent English.

Salary commensurate with experience.
