Description:
The Bantwana Initiative of World Education, Inc. is seeking candidates for a Nutrition Specialist position in Uganda pending award of a cooperative agreement from USAID/Uganda to reduce the vulnerability and improve the well-being of Uganda s orphans and other vulnerable children. The Nutrition Specialist will serve as the lead technical person for interventions to improve access and quality of food/nutrition services for orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC) and their households. S/he will oversee the development of school and home-based nutritional assessment and will work with program staff and other partners to design nutritional interventions that are linked with other program areas. The Nutrition Specialist will be the technical lead for capacity building and training of partners, including relevant government line ministries, NGOs/CBOs/FBOs, schools, community groups, other stakeholders in child development and nutrition.

The Project will focus on areas including:

1) Improve the socio-economic status of OVC households with a comprehensive and family focused package for their survival, growth, development and participation in the community;

2) Promote and provide child protection and legal services to OVC and their households; and

3) Strengthen delivery of integrated, quality social services to the OVC and their households through community based response systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for child health/development and nutrition component and interventions;

Design and develop school- and home-based nutritional assessment tools and work with team leaders to integrate nutritional component into other program components;

Develop and implement nutritional responses and interventions for OVC and households and work with community partners to improve knowledge of, quality, and access to child development and nutritional services for OVC;

Provide technical guidance to develop capacity among other providers and community partners in child development, WASH, and nutrition areas;

Oversee development of relevant curricular and training materials to help build capacity of various target groups;

Build capacity of OVC services providers, including community caregivers to provide information about child health, development and nutrition to OVC households and develop referral linkages with WFP, WASH programs, and other nutrition/agriculture services and programs;

Keep abreast of new work in technical areas and disseminate new knowledge to program staff;

Collaborate with other program staff to ensure timely delivery of products and regular reporting; and

Advocate and promote scale-up of best practices in community services.
QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in public health, child development, nutrition, medicine or related field;

Minimum 10 years technical experience in international public health, specifically child development and nutrition services;

Minimum 5 years with USAID or USAID-funded programs;

Demonstrated technical expertise in clinic-based and community-based care including design of nutritional assessments, and planning, implementation, and evaluation of nutritional services;

Knowledge of key nutritional interventions;

Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, communications, and supervisory skills;

Extensive experience in Uganda;

Good English language skills required.

Salary commensurate with experience.
