JOB TITLE: Community Interpreters
DEPARTMENT: Legal and Psycho-Social
SUPERVISOR: Intake Officer
DUTY STATION: Kampala
I. JOB SUMMARY: To provide optimal interpretation and translation support to the
Refugee Law Project to enable implementation of the project activities, and supporting
effective service delivery while ensuring good communication and co-ordination between
staff, clients and stakeholders.
II. RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
• Provide professional interpretation services to individual and group sessions for RLP
staff and partners
• Provide time-bound and accurate translation of brochures, documents, testimonies,
notices and adverts into the target languages
• Participate in the bi-monthly assessment visits to refugee settlements in Uganda
• Carry out research that is pertinent to interpretation services among refugee
communities for good practices
• Provide interpretation services to clients in courts of law and in health care facilities
• Provide interpretation services to clients at the police stations
• Participate in training community interpreters
• Supply subtitles for video documentaries
• Any other duties assigned
III. CONTACTS AND KEY RELATIONSHIPS
The Community Interpreter has to maintain very good relations with all the project staff,
visitors and clients. This will facilitate easier access to the Refugee Law Project offices.
IV. SUPERVISION AND AUTHORITY
The Intake Officer supervises the Community Interpreter. S/he supervises no one.
V. WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is Kampala based, with occasional field visits to settlement camps. The average
working week is 40 hours.
VI. QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
• Bachelors Degree or Diploma in any relevant field
• Proficiency in English and any of the following languages; French, Swahili, Amharic,
Arabic, Somali, Kinyarwanda
• One-year experience working as a community interpreter
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to work under pressure
• Excellent computer skills (MS Office, Word, Access, Excel, Power Point).
