Security Jobs at Refuge Law Project in Uganda

JOB TITLE: Security Guard
DEPARTMENT: Operations & Programme Support
SUPERVISOR: Administration & Human Resource Assistant
DUTY STATION: Kampala
I. JOB SUMMARY: To ensure safety of Refugee Law Project staff and property in the Kampala offices.
II. RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
• Receive and guide visitors, clients and stakeholders to the RLP Kampala office courteously
• Guard the RLP Kampala offices that have been assigned
• Protect the Kampala office from burglars and trespassers
• Ensure that fire equipment is in good working condition
• Watch out for any bad elements disturbing peace
• Look out for suspicious-looking items like unattended bags that could be a bomb
• Make use of the weapons provided to you responsibly (security guards are given night batons, sticks and
pepper spray)
• Respond and participate in emergency management
• Protect property and life of RLP Kampala staff
• Avoid behavior that could put the life of staff in jeopardy
• Promise to keep secret any information learnt about the RLP and its clients in the course of duty
• Record all security incidences
III. CONTACTS AND KEY RELATIONSHIPS
The Security Guard has to maintain very good relations with all the project staff, visitors and clients. This will
facilitate easier access to the Refugee Law Project offices.
IV. SUPERVISION AND AUTHORITY
The Administration & Human Resource Assistant supervises the Security Guard. S/he supervises no one.
V. WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is Kampala based, with no field travel. The average working week is 40 hours.
VI. QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
• Ordinary Level Certificate
• Should be trained in using weapons
• Knowledge of at least one form of martial arts is an added advantage
• Should be tall and well built, they should exercise regularly
• Should have a good stamina, in case they have to chase a perpetrator
• Should be courageous as; the job involves a lot of risk
• Should be willing to work in different shifts
• Should have a calm demeanour and good people skills, as they have to interact with a lot of people
• Take the initiative and consistently provide practical solutions to urgent problems
• Prior working experience as security guard preferably in NGO, medium sized enterprises/public service
institution is an added advantage.
• Ability to comfortably work in a team
• A strong commitment to Non-discrimination is a core requirement
