AFRIpads (U) Ltd. is a pro-poor social business founded in 2009 that locally manufactures and sells low-cost, cloth (washable) sanitary pads.  The company is a registered business in Uganda with a parent company in The Netherlands.  AFRIpads (U) Ltd.’s core objective is to address the high rates of school girl absenteeism due to the lack of affordable menstrual products by locally manufacturing an innovative and practical sanitary product.

In partnership with Plan Uganda, Plan Australia and Plan Netherlands, a four year project on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) is being implemented in Tororo and Lira districts.  The project seeks to address the Menstrual Hygiene Management needs of Ugandan schoolgirls and women, and to develop models for working with Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA) to create awareness and increases access to affordable, reusable sanitary pads, while at the same time presenting income generation opportunities for women.

AFRIpads (U) Ltd is seeking a Project Coordinator based in Tororo to drive the Menstrual Hygiene Management Project.  The successful candidate will have responsibility for the following:

Duties and Responsibilities:

MICROENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT

    Develop, grow and manage VSLA microenterprises of AFRIpads Menstrual Kits as an income generating activity (IGA) and to increase local access to cost-effective reusable sanitary pads. Use Plan Uganda’s standards as the model and guidelines.
    Strengthen the business capacity/acumen of participating VSLA members to develop and manage AFRIpads enterprises as an Income Generating Activity (IGA) through coaching and mentoring

SALES AND MARKETING

    Design and implement creative, locally-appropriate marketing to increase product and brand visibility, including social media, to improve local awareness of and access to AFRIpads Menstrual Kits
    Mobilise and manage payments from participating VSLA members, track stock against sales as well as income
    Maintain diligent, accurate records and administration of all sales-related activities, including daily, weekly, and monthly reporting, in addition to quarterly and annually reports.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

    Prepare all financial reporting, budgets, and stock-sales records on the project and be accountable for all designated project resources.
    Develop and submit quality and timely project reports based on the key project indicators and reporting formats as required by the donor and Plan.
    Develop and implement a system for capturing, documenting and disseminating project experiences on development of an AFRIpads business model, sanitation marketing, achievements, lessons learned and best practices to stakeholders (M&E)
    Establish and maintain appropriate working relationships with the major partner, Plan, as well as government and local NGOs/CBOs including Community Vision, Plan Uganda’s local partner on the VSLA program.
    Work closely with the Plan Uganda MHM Project Coordinator to achieve and exceed key project targets and performance indicators
    Oversee procurement from AFRIpads Ltd. in Kampala, stock management in Tororo, and stock supply for participating VSLA members

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

    Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in microfinance, business administration, sales & marketing, development economics, entrepreneurship or related fields.
    At least 3 years in direct implementation of rural sales and marketing OR microfinance (village banking) OR microenterprise development activities, desirably among women groups.
    Knowledge of Ugandan microfinance sector guidelines/standards on microenterprise and business development for especially rural communities.
    Knowledge of WASH/health promotion in schools and sanitation marketing.

Language and Skills:

    Complete familiarity with MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint and social media skills (Twitter, Facebook, You Tube).
    Motorcycle riding skills.
    Knowledge of Adhola and Ateso will be an added advantage.
