COMMUNICATION OFFICERS- 10 Vacancies

With the transformation of Makerere University into a Collegiate University, the institution wishes to strengthen her communication function and online presence at the respective semi-autonomous units. This will help to further tap into information and research generated at these levels.

The eight (8) Colleges include: Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Business and Management Sciences; Computing and Information Sciences; Education and External Studies; Engineering, Design, Art and Technology; Health Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; and Natural Sciences. The two (2) Schools include; The School of Law and The School of Veterinary Medicine.

Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified candidates for the following posts. 1. COMMUNICATION OFFICER (10 Vacancies)

Reports to: College Principal

Salary Scale: M5


Role:
The Communication Officer will be responsible for the management of the College’s communication function in liaison with the University Public Relations Office.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Develop communication objectives and communication plans for the College
2. Write speeches and press releases for College functions and events
3. Work with the Principal to provide appropriate information packages for the different audiences
4. Manage the composition, editing, design, recording, and production of publications such as quarterly newsletters, brochures, supplements, journals, annual reports and audio-visual recordings
5. Coordinate, integrate, and manage information contributed to the College website, establishing template formats and logical structures for web pages, and ensure that the website is regularly updated and its design and presentation is in line with University guidelines
6. Coordinate the organization of open days, exhibitions, visits and any other special events at the College
7. Manage media contacts and continuously provide newsworthy information to the media
8. Maintain an up-to-date database of College alumni
9. Providing Secretarial services to Conferences/Workshops as hosted by the College
10. Coordinate the promotion of Academic programmes, services and public image the College
11. Provide quarterly reports to the University Public Relations Office on the activities undertaken at the College
12. Constantly liaise with the University Public Relations Office in the execution of the above duties
13. Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by the College Principal

Required Attributes:

• In-depth understanding of the University, its policies and operations
• In-depth knowledge of national/international trends, conditions and developments related to communication and public relations
• Good interpersonal skills; proven experience in working as a member of a team
• Highly developed oral and written communications skills
• Ability to freely interact with and tactfully deal with the media
• Be results oriented, innovative and self motivated
• Ability to meet deadlines under minimum supervision

Minimum Required Qualification:
• An Honour’s Bachelors degree in any of the following disciplines: Communications, Public Relations, Literature or Journalism from a recognized institution
• A Masters degree in any discipline from a recognized institution

Required Experience:
• At least three (3) years related work experience in, or with the media, or in a public relations/corporate communications environment
• Experience in the planning and execution of public, community, stakeholder and media relations programs

Age Limit: Applicants should not exceed 50 years of age at the time of application.
