Nkumba University- Uganda

Nkumba University is one of the few private chartered universities in Uganda. It achieved this coveted status on 16th February 2007 based on its robust and attractive programmes.

The University is secular in outlook with an open access policy of admitting students without discrimination on account of religion, race, or ethnicity.


Mission, Objectives and Vision

Nkumba University as an institution of higher learning in a developing region seeks to realize the following objectives:

1. To widen access to higher education and professional development opportunities by providing high quality practical career oriented education to a wide range of students including adult continuing, re-entering and distance learners as well as fresh post secondary school leavers.
2. To raise the participation levels of women in higher education and hence in the business and public affairs of this nation and beyond.
3. To create a learning environment that nurtures confidence, promotes competence, creativity and character in the students so as to produce informed graduates who can think critically, communicate effectively, act responsibly and morally in an increasingly complex national and global environment.

Vision of the University

Nkumba University endeavours to be a national and regional centre of excellence in Applied Business Education in East Africa. The University’s motto is “I Owe You”. It embodies a commitment to human and professional interdependence, mutual obligation, and trust. The motto rhymes well with other aspirations which is symbiotic relationship between the individual, the institution and society. The three are equally challenged to make a worthwhile contribution to society and individuals.

Studying at Nkumba

Nkumba University is situated 17 miles (27 km.) along the Entebbe Highway, from Kampala. It occupies 30 acres of land on which administrative, residential and lecture buildings and other facilities" Safe situated. These include the Library, Computer Centres, Refectory, Lecture Halls, and Women's Halls of Residence.

The University stretches right away from the highway right to the market in Abayita Ababiri Trading Centre. The Campus lies on a hill surrounded by Nursery, Primary and Secondary schools. All these make Nkumba hill an educational centre.

1. Student Welfare

The University provides a students' health service maintained by a doctor and two nurses.Tne University doctor visits the clinic on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and treatment is free for all registered students.The nurses are available in the clinic on a full time basis. For major medical cases, Entebbe "Grade B" Hospital is a ten minutes drive, away from the main campus.

2. Religious Life

Nkumba University has a number religious associations which include Protestants, Catholics, the Seventh-Day Adventists, Moslems and Pentecostals. These organise weekly worship and other religious functions like the annual Christmas Carols and students are free to form any religious association or club as long as it is intended to promote the well-being of the student life and to encourage positive religious values.

3. Accommodation

There are residential buildings for both male and female students. Currently about 900 students stay in University accommodation. The University does not provide accommodation for married students. Students in that category have to find their own accommodation.The Dean of Students, however, has a register of recommended rent accommodation which the students are advised to consult before making their choices.

There is a substantial number of students who stay in rented accommodation in Abayita Ababiri and Entebbe. It is the responsibility of the students to find such accommodation. Those interested in the University accommodation should contact the Dean of Students, the Wardens and the Custodians who are responsible for such accommodation.

4. Sports and Recreation

The University has a number of facilities including sports facilities, a cafe and a canteen in addition to a few other social centres. With these facilities it has been possible to develop sportsmen and women who have excelled at both national and international levels. They have included Olympic Bronze Medallist - Davis Kamoga; KCC Soccer Star - Godfrey Mugisha and Basket Bailer - Omony; and national athletes - Martin Okello.Tony Okello, Francis Yiga and Joseph Nsubuga.

The University provides facilities and opportunities for a wide range of sports and recreations. These include playgrounds for football, volley-ball, rugby, badminton, darts, netball, tabletennis and chess facilities. Other recreation activities include clubs, social activities, music festivals, cultural events to mention but a few.

Students normally take part in the above activities from 5.00 to 7.00 p.m. during week days and from 3.00 to 6.00 p.m. on weekends.

Nkumba University is active in sports and because of this the inter-university games were held at Nkumba in 1999. The University sports teams have participated in both national and international games like all African Games, World Championships and Olympic games. The University has produced some of the fine sportsmen and women in the country, like Kasaija Sunday, Davis Kamoga, Omony, Godfrey Mugisha, Francis Yiga,Tonny Okello and Joseph Nsubuga. Sports and athletic competitions are held annually and all interested students take part.

5. Postal, Telephone and Internet services

There are postal, telephone, e-mail and fax facilities within the University and it's neighbourhood. Students are also free to acquire their own mobile telephones.

6. University Cafe

Besides the Refectory, there is a University Cafe where meals and drinks are served at modest charges. There are other eating and drinking places in the vicinity of the University campus.

Nkumba University campus has contributed to the development of the surrounding areas in which residential houses have been erected, eating and drinking places have been established, entertainment centres and other small businesses have continued to spring up.
