DUTY STATION: Kampala
I. JOB SUMMARY: To collect, analyse and publish reports that help in meeting our
stakeholders’ critical information requirements, while enforcing the highest ethical and
methodological standards by implementing research approaches which position the RLP to
collect and analyze highly sensitive population data and while protecting the safety and
anonymity of our respondents and interviewees.
II. RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
Summary of tasks include:
• Supporting researchers to fully understand develop and finalize their information
requirements from a sound and ethical methodological perspective
• Contributing to development of a research plan that ensures the utilization of the
most appropriate research methodologies for a particular piece of research,
including, focus groups, in-depth interviews and input from subject matter experts
are fully utilized
• Developing culturally and demographically appropriate research tools and plans
• Putting together and training Research Teams, and supervising their activities as
appropriate
• Supporting the department to fully understand and exploit the chosen research
methodology implications and opportunities of qualitative research efforts
• Conducting detailed methodologically sound social science analysis of collected
research to determine the implications and trends that the data reveal. The most
important task is the rapid production of top line findings
• Producing and presenting written reports and briefings on research findings to the
Head of Research and Advocacy Department
• Operating professionally, maturely and effectively in an environment where work
and living arrangements are heavily intertwined
III. CONTACTS AND KEY RELATIONSHIPS
The Qualitative Research Analyst has to maintain a good and close working relationship with
all Research and Advocacy staff, as well as IT and Communications staff. This is to enable
timely production and dissemination of research findings.
IV. SUPERVISION AND AUTHORITY
The Head of Research and Advocacy department supervises the Qualitative Research
Analyst. S/he supervises no one.
V. WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is Kampala based, with occasional field visits to settlement camps. The average
working week is 40 hours.
VI. QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
• Minimum Master’s Degree or advanced graduate training in socio-legal studies or
other relevant social sciences, with at least four years of experience working in an
applied qualitative research setting
• Formal training in social science research methods and a strong understanding of
basic statistical concepts
• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of data analysis tools such as Nvivo, SPSS
syntax, STATA, and/or SAS, Epidata In addition, the candidate will have experience
working with database tools such as Microsoft Access, SQL and/or Oracle
Discoverer
• Strong understanding of program evaluation methods for education demonstration
projects, including an understanding of the need to be responsive to agency requests
for data
• Experience querying data from a relational database
• Experience implementing evaluation models using propensity score matching, linear
regression and logistical regression strongly preferred
• Detail-oriented and ability to keep accurate, well-organized records
• Ability to be flexible and to work carefully and quickly to meet the demands of a
busy program
• Demonstrable oral and written communication skills
