JOB TITLE: Volunteer English For Adults Instructor

SUPERVISOR: English For Adults Instructor
DUTY STATION: Kampala
I. JOB SUMMARY: To teach adults functional English and practical skills.
II. RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
The tasks include the following:
• Teaching English as a second language and Functional Adult Literacy using “Speak
Your Rights” curriculum
• Assisting in field research and teaching different levels
• Preparing lessons, developing and using teaching materials.
• Assisting in managing a lending library
• Assisting in coordinating a Distance Education programme
• Managing referrals of students to FAL partners, and making follow ups
• Developing and maintaining proper statistics on students in various levels
• Developing and implementing work plans
• Writing progressive reports
• Performing any other activities as required
III. CONTACTS AND KEY RELATIONSHIPS
The Volunteer English for Adults Instructor has to maintain a good working relationship
with other Instructors, Adult learners and staff.
IV. SUPERVISION AND AUTHORITY
The English for Adults Coordinator supervises the Volunteer English for Adults Instructor.
S/he supervises no one.
V. WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is Kampala based, with occasional field visits to settlement camps. The average
working week is 40 hours.
VI. QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
• BA or Diploma in Adult and Community Development or Refugee Law/Human
Rights or its equivalent
• Experience in teaching English as a second language
• Knowledge of English vocabulary and grammar
• Knowledge of characteristics of adult learners
• Knowledge of one major refugee language (French, Somali and Kiswahili)
• Sound judgement, ethical practice and common sense
• Ability to teach English/FAL levels
• Creativity and innovation
