Program Development Grant


Description

The Program Development Grant is designed to encourage scholarly inquiry and multidisciplinary professional academic activities that contribute to the development or expansion of a program dedicated to the study of Canada or Canada bilateral and multilateral relations. We are particularly interested in innovative projects that promote awareness among students and the public about Canada and Canada bilateral and multilateral relations. We strongly encourage projects that lead to institutional linkages and research collaboration in priority areas with Canadian institutions as well as student mobility. Issues of importance for Canada include:

* Peace and Security
* North America Partnership (including key Canada-US bilateral issues)
* Economic Development and Competitiveness
* Democracy, Rule of law, Human Rights
* Managing Diversity
* Environment / Energy

Applications will be considered in accordance with the procedures, guidelines and conditions described below.

Eligibility

This grant is intended for foreign higher learning institutions or organisations that undertake activities to further the development or expansion of the Understanding Canada Program.

Terms and Conditions

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT), through the local Canadian mission, will provide successful applicants with funds to help meet expenses in accordance with the following conditions:

a) Grants are provided to help with the costs associated with Canadian Studies related activities. These costs include travel, honoraria, research and promotion materials, printing, website development, student mobility, linkages and research collaboration with Canadian universities, higher learning institutions or organisations, as well as faculty and course development.

b) No provision is made for released time stipends, secretarial services or overhead costs to the institution.


c) IMPORTANT: Proposals must be submitted in ENGLISH or FRENCH and budget figures must be in Canadian dollars. FAILURE TO RESPECT THESE OBLIGATIONS MAY LEAD TO AUTOMATIC REJECTION OF THE APPLICATION.

d) Particular attention will be given to the budget. The show of needs should be clearly and precisely demonstrated.

Application requirements

Applicants must complete the application form below and submit it to the local Canadian mission. Applications can be sent electronically or faxed. The applicants must ALSO submit the following materials electronically, if possible in a single file (in Rich Text (RTF) or Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format):

A) A concise proposal (four to eight pages, double-spaced) which include:

1) An overview of the program of activities, noting key participants involved, areas of program specialization (colloquium, speaker series, publications, research focus, outreach activities, study abroad programs, etc.) degrees or certificates offered, the school or program within which the Canadian Studies program is based;

2) A statement that identifies the goals and objectives of the program and indicates how the program advances the study of Canada and/or Canada bilateral and multilateral relations and broadens student awareness and appreciation of Canada and Canada bilateral and multilateral relations;

B) A schedule of recent and projected activities, including names of participants; names of all faculty members in the Canadian Studies program; articles, monographs and books published on Canada in the past year; a list of all courses with Canadian content along with enrolment figures, and courses to be taught with anticipated enrolments.

Organisations who received funding in previous years should also include a detailed report and financial accounting, indicating what was accomplished with the previous grant from Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada.

Evaluation of Applications

Applicants will be eligible for funding based on competitions at the national or regional level. Competitions will be held as follows:

* National competition for the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, China, Cuba, France-Belgium, Germany-Austria-Switzerland, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Russia, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom
* Regional competitions for the following countries: All countries and territories of Asia, Europe (including Central Europe), Latin America and Caribbean, not previously mentioned.

Applications need to be submitted to the local Canadian mission by the following deadlines:

* Latin America and Caribbean (both National and Regional competitions): October 1st, CUBA: May 1st
* Asia (both National and Regional competitions): December 10th except for China for which the deadline is April 30th.
* India: the process continues as before through the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI): December 10th
* Austria, Switzerland, Russia, Central European countries (Poland included), Flemish community, Ireland, Greece, Netherlands, Baltics, Nordic countries, Ukraine, Portugal: February 15
* United Kingdom: February 20
* Germany, Spain: March 15
* France: April 01
* Italy: April 15

Late applications will not be considered.

Upon receipt of the application:

a) The local Canadian mission will send a notice of receipt to the applicant.

b) The local Canadian mission will send a copy of the application and its recommendations to the appropriate program manager at the International Education and Youth Division (PCE) of DFAIT in Ottawa. Assessment of the applications will then be conducted by the program manager in consultation with the local Canadian mission and other divisions in DFAIT. All applicants will be notified in writing of the results of their applications, normally within 90 days of the deadline for submission of applications.
